Todrick Hall's "Low" - Song Review

There's no trying to deny the immense talent and star power of former American Idol contestant, YouTube sensation and Texas native Todrick Hall.

After advancing as one of the Top 16 finalists on the ninth season of Idol, Hall turned his creative sights on the viral video market. Each of his creations, including the irresistible "Mickey Minaj", "4 Beyonce" and "Beauty and the Beat Boots", easily rack up more than a million views, but it's nice to see the artist has not ignored plans for creating original material.

His latest release, the Oz-inspired "Low", is an infectious blend of hip-hop and dance similar to a structure you'd expect from a Guetta/Minaj collaboration. As Dorothy makes her way down the yellow brick boulevard to the Emerald City, meeting a gay Scarecrow, a Tin Man with "buns of steel" and a Mufasa look-alike King of the Jungle along the way, a sick beatdrop makes up a chorus worthy of many sweaty nights on the club floor.

Besides being catchy and fit for any queen in WeHo, the new single is an amazingly clever release that stays true to Hall's roots and inspiration. Fast paced verses, perfect for a bedtime story, showcase the artist's narrative songwriting abilities and strong vocal performance, not like we ever doubted. "Turn upside down like an hourglass, like somebody made it rain tryin' to milk that ass," he sings on the track's best line.

If "Low" didn't slay in audio form alone, Hall outdid himself once again by releasing an accompanying music video that may just be his best visual to date. While Hall plays Glenda The Good Witch of the North, The Wicked Witch of the West and The Wizard, the rest of the cast is shown getting down to the music and showing off their delectable cakes in the process, even Andrew Christian models join in on the fun.

Sure. The track borrows heavily from an already established work of art, but Hall's ability to turn a musical fantasy classic into a twerk-worthy dance hit is pretty impressive. "Low" has a fun premise, an infectious hook and polished production, qualities that could turn the release into a successful radio single. So, grab your bae or your boo and get down like a Munchkin to Hall's sickening new single.

P.S... thank you for the brilliant Good/Wicked Witch Halloween costume idea Toddy. Love ya!
