RYDER's "Ruins" - Single Review

It's amazing what a few years could do to a developing artist. Indie singer-songwriter RYDER was a promising young artist who I certainly wanted to keep my eye on. After having the chance to interview the then 20-year-old back in 2012 and experiencing her brilliant dance-pop efforts such as "Night Takes Over", "Animal" and "Ain't Nothing Wrong", the Los Angeles-based talent seemed to have vanished, presumably retreating to the drawing board to reignite the spark of her artistic freedom.

Now in 2015, RYDER seems to have returned with full force and a different plan of action. First, she lent her unique and hard-hitting vocal abilities to Blasterjaxx & DBSTF's "Beautiful World", then went on to release her "debut" single, the edgy, rock-leaning "Pretty Little Gangster", which has received over 384,000 plays on her official Soundcloud page. This was no longer the novice pop starlet I had first spoken with three years ago, this was a confident artist who was growing into her own original sound and style.

The guest vocal work and the release of "Pretty Little Gangster" set up the perfect path for RYDER to unleash her next official single, the emotional and powerful "Ruins". Carried by a somber, brooding vocal performance, at times reminiscent of Neon Hitch and Bebe Rexha, the new single wastes no time at pulling at the heartstrings of the love-torn listeners around the world. There's a sense of despair and strength as the artist overcomes the hurt caused by a former flame.

Even though much was left behind in shattered pieces at the end of a crumbling relationship for RYDER, don't expect her to dwell in sadness for too long. "Beauty in the breakdown, I'm not afraid, the love you never gave me, is slipping away", she sings, only to find a feeling of resilience on the track's infectious and convincing chorus. There are plenty of emotional influences on the artist's recent release, which makes for a complex, layered listen.

"Ruins" is a solid offering from an independent artist. It's already creating all sorts of positive buzz while showing just how versatile RYDER is. Though she may be unsigned at the moment, tracks such as her current single will make RYDER a hot commodity for record labels. Her voice is something special missing from the radio airwaves and her songwriting skills paint a picture of a light shining at the end of a dark tunnel. There's emotion and passion. That's missing these days.

To see RYDER reinvent herself with successful results is a pleasure to see. Gone are the days of dance-pop, exchanged for a fiery, commanding indie-pop sound which will only bring in a bigger audience as she continues to grow.
